The writer John Berger was born 100 years ago this 5th November at 1 Filey Avenue in Stoke Newington - just a short distance from the Meeting House. The author of more than 60 books, a Booker Prize-winner, filmmaker and artist, he is one of the most influential and loved writers of our times.
Berger’s work reimagined the relationship between art and technology; charted migrant labour and the disappearance of peasants from the world; explored the AIDS crisis; was trenchantly opposed to the War on Terror and passionately committed to the Palestinian cause.
This autumn, Arts on the Green welcomes the writer, editor and producer Gareth Evans for “John Berger at 100” - a curated series of book launches, screenings and conversations with some of Berger’s collaborators, hosted in one of Hackney’s oldest radical buildings.
