Jonah... follows a disparate group of nonconformists and radicals from Geneva who gather at a rural retreat to reflect on the aftermath of May 1968 and what the future might hold in the wake of those cultural uprisings. Widely considered to be Alain Tanner’s masterpiece, the work was co-written by acclaimed critic, poet, and painter John Berger (Wexner Center). "Intelligent without being cerebral, political without being dogmatic, cloaking its epic view of history in a wealth of burlesque domestic details, Jonah... is perhaps the most unpretentiously accomplished film yet to describe the revolutionary cultural changes and conservative economic forces that convergently define Western man’s social possibilities." Anne Michaels is a Canadian novelist and poet. Her books have been translated into more than 50 languages. Michaels has won dozens of international awards, including the Orange Prize, the Guardian Fiction Prize, and the Lannan Award for Fiction. Among many other honours she is a Guggenheim Fellow, has received honorary degrees, and has served as Toronto’s Poet Laureate. Her recent books include All We Saw, Infinite Gradation and Railtracks (co-written with John Berger). In 2020, her novel Fugitive Pieces was chosen as one of the BBC’s 100 Novels that Shaped the World. It has also been adapted as a feature film. She was shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2024 for Held (annemichaels.ca).

The writer John Berger was born 100 years ago this 5th November at 1 Filey Avenue, Stoke Newington. The author of more than 60 books, a Booker Prize-winner, filmmaker and artist, he is one of the most influential and loved writers of our times.
Gareth Evans is a Hackney-based writer, editor, film / event producer, creative consultant and host / presenter. He works on special projects for the London Review of Books and curates / hosts their 'Screen at Home' series (garethevans.org.uk/).
