In French director Louis Malle's free-wheeling theatre-film, actor and playwright Wallace Shawn sits down with his friend the theatre director André Gregory at Café des Artistes on New York’s Upper West Side. One of cinema's finest conversations follows, and the chatter flows back and forth, drifting from despairing confessionals about love, death and money, to the virtues to be found in everyday life.
Meticulously forged from months of taped recordings, My Dinner with André is at times ferociously funny, at times illogically profound, at times plumped with worry and self-doubt. In any case, it remains an invigorated piece of film history, both earthly and extravagant like the very best of meals.
